What are Visian ICLs?
One popular option our center provides is the Visian Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) for the treatment of moderate to high degrees of myopia (nearsightedness). A recent announcement from STAAR Surgical, the makers of Visian ICL, stated that the FDA has approved the Visian Toric ICL to treat patients with myopia and astigmatism.
“My family goes down there (to the lake) and I tended to always get water in my contacts and lose a contact and instead have to wear glasses for the day… This was a no brainer procedure for me. It’s great that I don’t have to carry around so many contact lens toiletries everywhere. The hassle is gone for me!”

The Visian ICL
This very thin, soft, flexible lens made of Collamer (an advanced lens material that is highly biocompatible) is implanted in the eye behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. The Visian ICL is microscopically thin and is easily inserted into the eye through a small incision that doesn’t require sutures.
The lens acts as an internal contact lens, providing immediate and permanent vision correction. It is best suited for people with moderate to severe myopia or nearsightedness and is a wonderful alternative to LASIK for these people, often producing visual results that are even better than traditional glasses or contacts.
The lens is made out of collagen, a naturally occurring protein, so it works in harmony with the eye. Even so, if there are any problems, the lens can be easily removed at any time, with little side effects.
There is no maintenance associated with the lens, and it is intended to remain in place as long as you are satisfied with your vision. If at any point your vision changes or you wish to have them removed, it can be done easily and without compromising your vision whatsoever.
Advantages of the ICL
If you are between the ages of 21 and 50, and suffer from a moderate to severe degree of nearsightedness with or without astigmatism, then you may be a candidate for this great procedure and the advantages it provides. These include:
99% Patient Satisfaction was reported in the FDA clinical studies for the Visian ICL over three years after the procedure.
Immediate vision improvement at all distances – eliminating the need for glasses or contacts
Sharp, Clear Vision: You can enjoy a new level of vision correction that’s sharper, clearer, more vivid, and has greater depth and dimension.
Designed to be Permanent, Yet Is Removable: One of the important advantages of the Visian ICL is that while it can permanently correct your vision, the lens can be simply removed and/or replaced if necessary. Also, concerns involving the cornea typically do not apply to the Visian ICL, as no natural corneal tissue is permanently removed or reshaped in any way during implantation.
Does Not Cause Dry Eye: Visian ICL does not cause or contribute to dry eyes. If you have dry eyes, ask your doctor if the Visian ICL may be the best vision correction option for you.
Short Recovery Time: The recovery for the Visian ICL is quick and pain-free, and may be as little as one day, due to the very small size of the opening required. Patients typically experience minimal discomfort, and many times go back to work the next day.
UV Protection: Long-term exposure to UV radiation can damage your eyes; and longer term or more intense exposure increases the chance of eye disorders including the development of cataracts and some retinal problems. As an added feature, the Visian ICL advanced lens material contains a UV blocker that actually prevents harmful UVA and UVB rays from entering the eye, possibly preventing the development of UV related eye disorders.
Treatment Flexibility for the Future: Your vision changes as you grow older and eventually almost everyone will need cataract surgery. An important benefit with the Visian ICL is that you have options for future treatments. Because Visian ICL maintains the structure of the eye, the lens can be removed and replaced if your vision changes substantially, or if you have another procedure at any time.
Simplification of Life: There is no daily maintenance as with traditional contact lenses, and no concern of problems from daily activities such as swimming and sports.
Not a LASIK Candidate – Patients who have corneas too thin or prescriptions too high for LASIK can still live a life glasses free thanks to this procedure.
The Visian ICL® Procedure
The Visian ICL accommodates for a wide range of vision needs and is considered a good vision correction option for patients with:
Thin Corneas: The cornea is the curved portion on the front surface of the eye. The Visian ICL does not have any effect on the cornea and may be appropriate if you have thin corneas.
Dry Eyes: Visian ICL does not cause or contribute to dry eyes.
Extreme Refractive Error: Refractive error in the focusing of light by the eye is a frequent reason for reduced visual acuity. Anyone seeking clear vision may be a candidate for the Visian ICL, including those patients with low and extreme high refractive errors.
The procedure is performed on a simple outpatient basis and usually only takes 5 to 10 minutes per eye. During the procedure, your eyes will be numbed with local anesthesia. Your surgeon will make a microscopic, self-sealing incision into your eye, and the lens will be injected into place. There is little, if any discomfort and the result are immediate.
What you need to know about the Visian ICL
How do I know if I am a candidate?
A good candidate for the Visian ICL is a patient between the ages of 21 and 50 who is nearsighted. It is preferable that the patient has not had previous eye surgery or a history of ophthalmic disease such as glaucoma, iritis, or diabetic retinopathy. Our practice offers a complimentary screening to determine if you are a candidate for this exciting procedure.
Where in the eye is the Visian ICL placed?
The Visian ICL is surgically inserted inside the eye just behind the iris in front of the eye’s natural lens. The Visian ICL does not touch any internal eye structure and stays in position without maintenance, indefinitely.
What is the track record of the Visian ICL?
Extensive research and development preceded the introduction of the Visian ICL. It is now being used by more than 1,000,000 patients worldwide. The satisfaction rate among patients is extremely high – above 99%. The Visian ICL provides unparalleled quality of vision and has excellent and stable outcomes for patients with moderate to severe myopia. The Visian ICL has been available internationally for over 20 years.
Does it hurt?
No. Most patients state that they are very comfortable throughout the procedure. We use a topical anesthetic drop prior to the procedure. A light sedative is given prior to the procedure.
Can the Visian ICL be seen by the naked eye?
No. The lens is positioned behind the iris where it is invisible to both you and observers. You enjoy a cosmetic appearance that is completely natural. Only your doctor will be able to tell that you’ve had vision correction.
What is the Visian ICL made of?
The Visian ICL is made of Collamer which is an advanced lens material that is highly biocompatible. Collamer does not cause a reaction inside the eye and it contains an ultraviolet filter that provides protection to the eye.
What is involved in the Visian ICL procedure?
One to two weeks before your procedure, your surgeon will make a small opening with a laser to allow fluid to pass between the lens and the front chamber of the eye. The actual Visian ICL procedure typically takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis, although you will need to have someone with you to drive you home from the procedure. Normally, very little discomfort is associated with this procedure. A light topical drop anesthetic is administered and a mild sedative is given. In addition, eye drops will be prescribed. You will come back to our office for a follow up visit the day after your procedure, and at one week and one month. Further follow ups are scheduled as needed.
How long does the Visian ICL stay in my eye?
The Visian ICL is intended to remain in place within your eye without any maintenance.
Can the Visian ICL be felt once it is in my eye?
No, the lens is not noticeable after it is put in place. It does not attach to any structures within the eye and it stays in position.
