One option that has proven to be an excellent alternative to LASIK and other Laser Vision Correction procedures is the Staar® Visian™ Intraocular Contact Lens or ICL.

The Visian ICL

The Visian ICL, also known as a “phakic IOL,” is a small lens that is implanted in the eye behind its pupil. The lens is microscopically thin and is easily inserted into the eye through a small incision that doesn’t require sutures.

The lens acts as an internal contact lens, providing immediate and permanent vision correction. It is best suited for people with moderate to severe myopia or nearsightedness, and is a wonderful alternative to LASIK for these people, often producing visual results that are even better than traditional glasses or contacts.

The lens is made out of collagen, a naturally occurring protein, so there is little risk of your body rejecting the lens. Even so, if there are any problems, the lens can be easily removed at any time, with little side effects.

There is no maintenance associated with the lens, and it is intended to remain in place as long as you are satisfied with your vision. If at any point your vision changes or you wish to have them removed, it can be done easily and without compromising your vision whatsoever.

Advantages of the ICL

If you are between the ages of 21 and 50, and suffer from a moderate to severe degree of nearsightedness, then you may be a candidate for this great procedure and the advantages it provides. These include:.

  • Immediate vision improvement at all distances – eliminating the need for glasses or contacts

  • Simplification of life – There is no daily maintenance as with traditional contact lenses, and no concern of problems from daily activities such as swimming and sports.

  • Easily updated or removed – the lens can be easily changed or removed should your vision change down the road

  • It is a great alternative to LASIK – Patients who have corneas too thin, or prescriptions too high for LASIK can still live a life glasses free thanks to this procedure.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed on a simple outpatient basis and usually only takes 5 to 10 minutes per eye. During the procedure, your eyes will be numbed with a local anesthesia. Your surgeon will make a microscopic incision into your eye, and the lens will be injected into place. There is little, if any discomfort, and the result are immediate.
