At Price Vision Group, we help to treat a variety of eye conditions - Fuchs' Dystrophy is one of them. It is a slowly-progressing, inherited corneal disease that usually affects both eyes, also known as Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy. The endothelium is a delicate inner layer of the cornea and acts as a pump mechanism; in charge of removing fluids from the cornea to help maintain its clarity. But as this condition progresses, the endothelial cells are eventually lost and instead of growing back, they spread out to empty spaces. This causes less efficiency of the pump system, thus producing corneal clouding, swelling and eventually, reduced vision.
Women are about five times as likely as males to develop Fuchs' Dystrophy, with symptoms appearing most commonly among people over the age of 50. Once the patient's vision is sufficiently diminished - negatively affecting the quality of life, treatment known as penetrating keratoplasty, or corneal transplantation, can help restore vision. Our doctors at the Price Vision Group can help you understand if this treatment is right for your condition. Feel free to download a patient history or patient information form to get started.
