A lot has changed in the last 25 years, including cornea transplants!
Twenty-five years ago, Michael Jackson unveiled the Moonwalk, and Ronald Reagan announced Star Wars defense to intercept Soviet missles. The Challenger space shuttle carried the first woman and first African American into space. McDonalds introduced McNuggets, Swatch began selling watches, Microsoft introduced Word, and Nintendo began selling entertainment systems. Tom Brokaw became the lead anchor for NBC Nightly News.
We were recently invited to reflect on how transplants have changed in the last 25 years and speculate on what lies ahead. Some of the big improvements we've seen so far are:
- new targeted transplant methods that preserve healthy areas of the cornea
- use of lasers to create interlocking incisions
- new eye drops to reduce inflammation, treat glaucoma, and prevent rejection
The cornea is the crystal clear dome that covers the front of the eye. The majority of the refracting of light rays is accomplished by the cornea. There are up to 10 million people suffering corneal blindness in the world. This can be caused by accidents or diseases damaging the front of the eye. When the rest of the eye functions fully, the replacement of the cornea is all that is needed to restore sight. The first artificial cornea transplant surgery in Indiana took place at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital and was performed on an 85-year-old male patient. Francis Price Jr., MD, is the first surgeon in Indiana to be accredited to implant AlphaCor, the first internationally approved artificial cornea implant. The device provides a viable alternative to patients who reject human cornea tissue transplants and have no other options to improve or regain vision. You can find Dr. Price here in Indianapolis at Price Vision Group.
At Price Vision Group, we also offer patients sutureless cornea transplant surgery. Not only does this eliminate suture-related problems, it also leaves the eye stronger and more resistant to injury. Plus sutureless cornea transplant surgery offers rapid visual recovery.
