Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) in Indianapolis Indiana
Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) is a minimally invasive refractive procedure that uses radio-frequency energy to correct mild farsightedness and presbyopia (the need for reading glasses) in patients.
As we age, there will eventually come a time when we will need to wear reading glasses. CK is an easy, non-laser procedure that can correct presbyopia with little discomfort and no downtime.
How CK Works
With CK, your surgeon uses a tiny instrument to apply radio-frequency energy in small spots in a ring-like pattern around the periphery of your eye. This energy causes the tissue of the cornea to tighten in those areas and essentially forms a belt that draws the outer portion of the cornea inwards.
This tightening action causes the cornea to steepen, effectively changing the way light passing through the eye is focused, and strengthening the eye’s close-up visual ability.
The procedure takes only minutes to perform, and is done in-office using anesthetic eye drops. Unlike LASIK, there is no tissue removed from the eye, and other than maybe some mild discomfort shortly afterwards, the complications are virtually nonexistent.
Advantages of CK:
- No cutting - helps minimize side effects and speed recovery
- Convenience and comfort - the procedure is performed in office
- Fast treatment - procedures generally last between three and five minutes
- Immediate results
Things To Be Aware Of
Although CK is an easy and painless solution for correcting mild farsightedness and eliminating reading glasses, there are a few things to keep in mind:
The procedure is not permanent. The tissue shrinkage will fade over time and re-treatment will be necessary. A typical treatment lasts 3-5 years
The procedure cannot correct nearsightedness or astigmatism. While it can eliminate the need for reading lenses, glasses or contacts will still be needed to see clearly at all distances.
Monovision may be necessary. If your only vision problem is the need for reading glasses, than CK will only be applied to one eye. This is called monovision – where one eye is adjusted for close-up viewing and the other for distance vision. It’s how our brains are wired to see, but some people may have a hard time adjusting to the sensation. Be sure and ask your surgeon for a trial pair of contacts that will simulate your monovision CK before you elect to have the procedure.
